Men of Honor: Philip V. Caruso
April 10, 2001 at 04:00 AM EDT

During his long, decorated career, Navy diver Carl Brashear (Gooding) rescued a trapped sailor from a sunken ship, helped recover a lost hydrogen bomb, and survived leg amputation to become the Navy’s first black master diver. But, as Men of Honor makes clear, he was at his bravest while enduring rampant racial prejudice throughout the ranks. This somewhat stodgy biopic charts too conventional a course in telling Brashear’s story, but Gooding’s impassioned stoicism — and De Niro’s tortured performance as Brashear’s brawling, bigoted training officer — put real feeling behind the spit and polish.
