Newcomer Rodriguez puts the ”pow” in girl power with her rough-edged portrayal of a ghetto teen who finds salvation through boxing. Her scowl, both menacing and hunted, gives heat to the film’s too-pat elements (the disapproving dad, the wise trainer, the big victory tinged with regret), elevating a sports melodrama into something that packs more punch.
