Money can’t buy her love, but ”Love Don’t Cost a Thing” did buy Jennifer Lopez the top spot on MTV’s weekly video countdown, where such extravagantly produced anti-materialist messages are sure to prosper. The runner-up was last week’s topper, ”Butterfly,” from SoCal rap-rockers Crazy Town. Close behind were new mama Madonna with ”Don’t Tell Me,” and OutKast apologizing to someone’s mama in ”Ms. Jackson.” There’s something for almost everyone, from Dido’s rapturously grateful ”Thank You” to the nauseous pop of Pink’s ”You Make Me Sick.” And all this breadth comes gratis with basic cable.
