One way to refresh the bank of film-scoring ideas is to hire outside the ranks of usual suspects. Chinese-American composer Tan Dun, celebrated for his classical and operatic writing, conceived an elegant and exciting body of East-West orchestral music for this graceful martial arts hit. Cellist Yo Yo Ma is sometimes a melodic protagonist, and CoCo Lee sings the theme song, ”A Love Before Time.” But the hero is Tan, whose evocative score defies cliches and gravity, like the movie’s gymnastic mystics.
