Lost, indeed. Branagh’s once charming Bardolatry has officially transmogrified into shameless, numbskulled pageantry. Here, he takes a potentially engaging concept (love-comedy as pre-WWII movie-musical) and ruins it with unrestrained mugging, pedantic newsreel narration (for you morons who don’t speak the Shakespeare), and out-of-the-blue dance spasms. As for the original conceit — a bookish, all-male kingdom invaded by witty damsels — well, who’s got time to lampoon academic patriarchy when there’s a Cole Porter song to butcher! C+
