If Grisham had a protègé… well, he’d probably do a slightly snazzier job than Reed Arvin manages to in the legal thriller The Will. At the center of the story is brilliant big-time attorney Henry Matthews, who is clearly ripe for redemption. (He was, after all, headed for the priesthood until a car accident killed his parents and his faith.) When Matthews is summoned home to Kansas to settle the will of the most powerful man in town, it’s a no-brainer that with the help of Amanda — Arvin’s beautiful, environmentally correct heroine — Matthews will save his soul. Arvin fills his second novel with corrupt politicians, lunatic family members, and plot twists, but ultimately, The Will loses its way. B-
