Plenty of melancholy bands are happy to follow in the wake of the Radiohead juggernaut. Coldplay, your up-to-the-minute Britpop sensation, combines impressionistic and stately guitars with Chris Martin’s gorgeous sickbed voice, a keening, cracking thing that slips into falsetto at the drop of a tear. (Check out his eerie Jeff Buckley-style whoops and flutters on the aptly titled ”Shiver.”) Parachutes is dreamy, regretful pop with melodies that dog you like a missed opportunity. B+
