Want to make a case for the creative bankruptcy of modern pop? Look no further than Now That’s What I Call Music! 5, which compiles the crummiest singles crowding the airwaves, stressing screamybop anthems like ‘N Sync’s ”It’s Gonna Be Me,” 98[degrees]’s ”Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche),” and Britney Spears’ ”Lucky.” Even flimsy stars like these boast perkier hits. A few bright spots do peek through, like Janet’s Bacharachian ”Doesn’t Really Matter,” or Destiny’s Child’s athletic ”Jumpin’ Jumpin.”’ Otherwise the set makes today’s pop seem even drearier than it actually is.
