Championing eclecticism is a tough job in a specialist’s age, but freethinking clarinetist Don Byron has made it his business. The project A Fine Line: Arias & Lieder attempts to illuminate the common ground in the music of Ornette Coleman, Puccini, Chopin, Roy Orbison, Stevie Wonder, and beyond. Guests like Cassandra Wilson and Patricia O’Callaghan aid in the experiment, and while the center doesn’t hold as well as Byron might want, there is enough musical heat to keep us listening. B
