Cher and Bob Dole

From the strange bedfellows department: Cher, last seen stumping for Al Gore, is joining former Republican senator Bob Dole to raise awareness for the World War II Memorial in D.C. The unlikely alliance formed when Cher contacted Dole to discuss a potentially offensive lyric — ”The times we live in have less value than Bob Dole’s useless arm” — on her new album, ”He was taken aback, but he just wanted to make sure people didn’t think I was picking on handicapped people,” she says. ”I never liked him — I thought he was mean and cranky — but he’s funny.” Cher will donate the tune ”Fit to Fly” (about her war-vet grandfather) to Dole’s project — he’s national chairman of the World War II Memorial Campaign — and may make a promotional video. ”If you’d told me I was gonna do something with a Republican other than Sonny,” Cher confesses, ”I would’ve said, ‘Yeah, not in this life.”’
