The pianist Bill Charlap’s role models are impeccable mainstream stylists like Hank Jones, Tommy Flanagan, and the late Teddy Wilson, craftsmen whose beautiful touch and sureness of phrasing imbued each note with elegance. On Written in the Stars, playing with finesse rather than individuality, Charlap isn’t there yet. In time he’ll learn that peering through a window gets a jazz player only so far; sometimes he has to step out on the ledge to achieve true distinction. B-
