Loosely linked to his hit 1982 album, Night and Day, the new song set arrives with a theme — the agony-ecstasy of life in New York — teetering precariously, and sometimes preciously, on the line between musical theater and indigenous ”street” music. He enlists help from vocalists Marianne Faithfull and the artful Sussan Deyhim. The recognizable chord change from ”Stepping Out” creeps in, like a ghostly reminder of his pop life before Big Ideas started eating at him. B-
