Imagine a grittier Aimee Mann fronting Garbage and you’ll understand the appeal of the L.A.-based singer-songwriter Poe. Recorded on her home computer, Haunted‘s evocative sound collages — guitar, voice samples, percussion, synth — broaden standard notions of ”song” while steering clear of self-indulgent meandering. True, the lyrics aren’t always the freshest (”I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum”), but her sonic talents turn most cuts into notable Poe-etry. B
