Music Review: 'Blender'
The Georgia band Collective Soul has chosen an apt title, Blender, for their fifth album; every song feels like a puree of alt-rock tropes (a little U2 bombast here, a little Smashing Pumpkins breathy balladry there). Not even the few exotic spicings — a darker, more industrial vibe, a Beatles-like duet with Elton John — can save the stew. Soul controller Ed Roland displays an effortless knack for pop formula, but the slick production is missing one key ingredient: personality. C+
