Tina Fey will join Jimmy Fallon as co-anchor of the show's 'Weekend Update' news skit
They’re a team and you’re not. In the tradition of Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin, Saturday Night Live will feature a coed duo at the Weekend Update desk: Jimmy Fallon and head writer Tina Fey.
”There’s chemistry,” exec producer Lorne Michaels says of his choice to replace outgoing anchor Colin Quinn (who left to pursue film work). ”And there was something to the sound of Fallon and Fey.” Best known for his song parodies, Fallon, 26, promises no ”ignorant slut”-type point-counterpoint, though ”if something bombs, we’ll probably laugh at the other person. We might even ask them to do it again.”
His deskmate, who will remain head writer, is a Second City vet and starred in a live sketch show in New York this summer. Fey says she didn’t ask to audition; Michaels approached her. ”You never want to be the person who says, ‘Maybe I should be in this,”’ laughs Fey, 30. ”Then you’d be a jerk.” That never stopped Dennis Miller.
