In 1971 London, an uptight but wacky Pakistani immigrant (My Son the Fanatic‘s Puri) flips when his half-Brit offspring stray from the family’s strict Muslim ways. It’s a potentially piquant comedic premise, but the script doesn’t win favor with its painfully strained gags about circumcision and arranged marriages. And when the story takes a jarringly dark turn, East Is East really goes south. C
