Music Review: 'Beatin' the Heat'
In the early ’70s, Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks earned a cult following with his idiosyncratic rock-folk-western-Django-swing sound and wry hipster wit. A quarter century on, he’s re-created the band (including original Hot fiddler Sid Page) and spiced things up with stellar, simpatico musicians — Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Rickie Lee Jones — for a playful album of mostly new, old-sounding tunes on Beatin’ the Heat. While occasionally veering toward NPR nostalgia, Hicks and his sassy music have aged remarkably well. B
