A Hollywoodized version of abject poverty in 1960s Ireland, Agnes Browne is Angela’s Ashes lite. As a newly widowed mother of six, Huston, who also directed, is likable enough — especially in scenes with her lusty best friend (Monks) — but the film suffers from its liteness, with a deus ex machina ending that’s a little too happy for a woman whose suffering is always too easily alleviated.
