While it offers the usual mix of romantic mishaps and career struggles found in single-girl fiction, Welcome to My Planet *where English Is Sometimes Spoken goes one smarter than its counterparts, with rich, detailed portraits of romantic and familial bonds (”Parents have the unfortunate job of being the trampoline from which you spring, again and again, until you’re comfortable being in the air”). It also boasts a terrific narrator, a 30-year-old Minnesotan who manages to be endearing despite (or perhaps because of) her allergies, crankiness, and hideous spending habits. Don’t dismiss this one as a pallid Bridget Jones imitation — it’s an engaging debut with real snap and style. A-
