If you should ever feel the urge to rent Ghosts of Mississippi, resist it (nonviolently, of course); get the TNT ’60s drama Freedom Song instead. Frustrated teen Owen (The Hurricane‘s Shannon) aches to take on the status quo — and his circumspect father (Glover). Enter the SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) organizers, with their civil rights sit-ins, and cue the racial and generational conflict. Laudably, director-cowriter Phil Alden Robinson (Field of Dreams) generates tension even as he keeps the action believable (no gratuitous car chases!), thereby showing respect for the era’s survivors — and his audience.
