Two albums released simultaneously, with Beautiful Creature intended to be, well, beautiful and Juliana’s Pony: Total System Failure a furious freakout. On Beautiful‘s ”Choose Drugs,” a guy opts for mind-altering substances over Juliana, and on other songs, she’s bullied, confused, and down on herself. On Total, she calls the junkie her ”slave” and commands him to get her junk food, aspirin, cough medicine and condoms. She equates herself with the drugs he’s consuming: all kick, with murderous withdrawal symptoms. Total‘s tunes about road rage and S&M (she’s pro-both) are so cathartic, I don’t even mind that the song puts me — and parents everywhere — down. Total is addictive. Beautiful: B- Total: A
