Virtuoso German cabaret singer Ute Lemper — the killer blond of Broadway’s Chicago — leaves Kurt Weill (mostly) behind for the equally smoky and sophisticated terrain of contemporary art pop on Punishing Kiss. Filtering songs by Elvis Costello, Nick Cave, and the Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon (a lovely discovery here) through her decidedly European, and female, sensibility, she works their tunes into emotionally vivid theater.
