Like Aimee Mann’s geeky kid sister, Jill Sobule crafts smart, neoclassic pop with a middle child’s talent for attention-getting. On her fine fourth set, Pink Pearl, she splits time between wry confessionals and third-person character dissections while artfully nodding to the bards (Bacharach, the Beatles, Jobim, etc.). As with her 1995 chart blip, ”I Kissed a Girl,” she can sometimes seem too clever by half. But these days, pop needs all the clever it can get. B+
