”Impostor” pits respected character actors D’Onofrio and Sinise against each other in a ”Fugitive”-style battle of wits and agility set in the year 2075. Right, Vincent? ”Well, I just chase Gary around for a couple of hours, and I do it as good as I can.” Or, as Sinise explains, ”It’s one day in the life of my character, and it’s a hell of a day.”

This adaptation of a story by Philip K. Dick (who provided the base story for ”Blade Runner”) finds Sinise suspected of being an alien spy on the verge of detonating. D’Onofrio is the officer assigned to bring him in. It was originally planned as one 40-minute part of a sci-fi trilogy for Miramax, but when studio head Bob Weinstein saw some dailies, he asked Fleder (”Kiss the Girls”) to stretch it into a feature — in the middle of the shoot. ”I said, ‘Bob, we can’t just do that,”’ says Fleder. ”And then I remembered who I was talking to, and then it didn’t seem so implausible.”
