Another ”unauthorized guide,” this one to an even more popular show, is The ER Companion, by Stephen Spignesi. It’s a big, thick compendium of facts about the stars of NBC’s top-rated drama, as well as episode plot summaries and a chapter entitled ”What’s Your ER IQ?” (”What was Mookie’s street name?” Um, Marcel Proust?) The ER Companion also includes things like a list of the series’ ”Most Disgusting Patients.” Like so many books of this sort, it’s self-negating: To anyone who watches the show, it’s dully obvious; to any newcomer, it might as well be written in Urdu.
