Guitar hero John Scofield follow up his Medeski Martin and Wood collaboration with Bump, another groove-lined affair, full of steamy, infectious rhythms and choice guitaring. Call him an acid-jazz avatar, but this is really a logical extension of his rock & soul-inflected ’80s work, before he pursued a more focused ”jazz” direction. Introspection sneaks in, via the cerebral harmonic colors that slip into the funk-making. Smart, arty party music. B+
