It plays like a killer videogame. Maraschino-haired Lola (Potente) has 20 minutes to find 100,000 deutsche marks for her drug-dealing boyfriend Manni (Bleibtreu) or he’s a dead man. Tearing through Berlin, she runs for the dough, failing and starting again at the film’s beginning twice before she finally gets it right. In this fierce rumination on fate and renewal, writer-director Tom Tykwer crafts a masterful pop piece, humming with raw romance, youth, and energy.
