How inept is screenwriter Kevin Williamson’s directorial debut, Teaching Mrs. Tingle? Pick one: (a) so inept that even an actress as reliably terrific as Mirren winds up looking like a community-theater reject; (b) so inept that it actually trots out the old corpse-springs-to-sudden-life bit, sans redeeming irony; (c) so inept that you find yourself feeling relieved that somebody else penned the script for ”Scream 3”; or (d) all of the above, and more besides. Pencils down.

Reel Goodies Marisa Coughlan, as Holmes’ cohort in revenge, provides a welcome distraction by doing a lengthy impression of Linda Blair in ”The Exorcist,” for no apparent reason. The Last Detail Lesley Ann Warren, who also turned up in ”Twin Falls Idaho” and” The Limey,” after spending years doing TV movies, appears unbilled as Holmes’ mother.
