‘Twas the month before Christmas and all through the movie house not a creature was stirring — except for a couple of mice: namely, Stuart Little and Mr. Jingles, star of Stephen King’s Green Mile (both profiled on page 58). And while there’s not another Babe sequel, you will find at least one babe in The World Is Not Enough —Denise Richards, who cuts a striking action figure as the new Bond girl (page 68). You’ll also discover a chimney full of Oscar hopefuls (page 82), from Jodie Foster in Anna and the King to Jim Carrey in Man on the Moon, and swarms of films based on literature (see Angela’s Ashes and Sleepy Hollow, on pages 53 and 38). Plus, a stocking stuffed with Philip Seymour Hoffman (page 62), who’s everywhere (in Flawless with Robert De Niro, in Magnolia with Tom Cruise, and in The Talented Mr. Ripley with Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow), and Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, who’s slaying critics with his latest (page 75). All that and a handy calendar of openings (on page 84). Just beware: Some of these movies are long (page 61), so be sure to pack some fruit-cake on the way to the multiplex.
