In this follow-up to 1996’s Rewrites, his first memoir, one of the most successful and prolific American playwrights (The Odd Couple, Lost in Yonkers) traces his professional lulls and triumphs over the course of his four marriages (including one to Goodbye Girl star Marsha Mason), ostensibly to shed light on the intangible thread between art and life. But he’s so much more ardent about his work than about the relationships he often used as source material that his motivation seems iffy. Readers may suspect that he’s more interested in assuaging his nagging artistic insecurities than in probing his marital ones. B-
