The Beatles’ only animated feature gets a suitably momentous video reissue, with both its songs and its trippy images vibrantly remastered. Can they mean as much to a new generation as they did to the kiddies (and hippies) of the ’60s? Probably not. But this fantastical voyage to Pepperland — where the Fab Four fend off the big, bad Blue Meanies through the power of music — still boasts enough inspired surrealism to hold up 30 years later. Same goes for the hip dialogue. Sure, some of the puns and in-jokes sound a little dated, but any movie that strings together lines from Shakespeare merely as a throwaway comic riff is, in my book, a film for the ages. A-
