In theaters, the lazy haziness of this Southern ensemble comedy made the story feel like it was stuck in the mud. But on video, the simple plot — a Mississippi man (Charles S. Dutton) is wrongly accused of his friend’s murder — rambles right along (credit the amiable stock characters). Liv Tyler is sweetly gruff as the tomboy troublemaker, Moore duly limp as her dim-witted mama, and Close good and righteous as Moore’s custodial sister. Under Robert Altman’s direction, there is, of course, the occasional whiff of overdone quirk. But it all results in a comedy that, while not big on laughs, is still quite likable. B
