If you’re one of the nearly 20 million people who listen to the syndicated radio-advice program hosted by Dr. Laura Schlessinger, you’ve no doubt noticed the dominatrix aura she projects while lashing callers with brusque questions and stinging rebukes until they dissolve into quivering blobs. So it’s no surprise that in private she’s equally despotic. Bane, a writer for PEOPLE, dredges up the radio host’s own tantrums, vendettas, brush-offs, and mess-ups. But while briskly telling Schlessinger’s Brooklyn-to-L.A., rags-to-riches story, the author relies too much on a cacophony of quoted experts and writes in a too earnest tone. A subject so full of ironies could have used more wit. B
