Of course, escapism isn’t all that the movies have to offer, but you may still want to ask yourself whether you’re really in the mood for a painfully accurate portrait of the final weeks of a failed marriage. Both Auteuil (Jean de Florette) and Huppert (La Ceremonie) are as magnificent as ever, conveying a bevy of complex, sometimes contradictory emotions without resorting to the shrill shouting matches that tend to mar American films on the same subject. Still, there’s no denying that it’s a bit of an ordeal, and Auteuil’s cuckolded husband is so relentlessly passive-aggressive that you’re liable to gradually become active-annoyed.
