The Prestige Records Story

Covering the years 1949-71, when Prestige Records was independent, this four-CD set includes masterly performances by Gil Evans, Eric Dolphy, and bighearted, big-toned sax groups the likes of which we’ll never see again (Coleman Hawkins, Arnett Cobb). In the later years, quality falls off, as journeyman mood creators like Joe Jones and Charles Earland succeed giants like Sonny Rollins and Miles Davis. But The Prestige Records Story‘s early highlights — loose, swinging, and honest — are as good as jazz gets.
