At a time when pop-tune parades pass for film scores, it’s a treat to hear another of Stanley Kubrick’s eclectic musical mixes. The soundtrack to his last film, Eyes Wide Shut, is framed by the cerebral modernist rigor of Gyorgy Ligeti (also on 2001) and includes Shostakovich, Chris Isaak, Oscar Peterson, moody evocations by Jocelyn Pook, and pianist Brad Mehldau’s languid read on ”Blame It on My Youth.” Kubrick had a keen musical ear, matching sound to sight in ways just right and weird enough to keep our ears wide open.
