Stuart’s long-awaited concept album, The Pilgrim, turns out to be a hillbilly opera about love, betrayal, death, and redemption, based on a true story from his hometown. While his writing has never been more lyrical, it doesn’t disguise the thinness of the plot and the flaccid resolution. What saves the project is Stuart’s smart, dramatic use of such guest narrators as Emmylou Harris, George Jones, Ralph Stanley, Pam Tillis, and Johnny Cash. And, Lord yes, the picking. B
