Christensen's first novel, In the Drink, is one of the sassy new Bridget Jones look-alikes. Her main character, the wryly self-observant Claudia Steiner ("Over the years, I'd begun to take a perverse pleasure in seeing just how bad my life could get before the whole thing blew"), doctors everything — even her coffee — with vodka. It compensates for her lousy job. It also eases the pain of nursing a secret crush on a guy who seems interested only in nursing his single-malt Scotch. After the heroine's first few benders, the charm of drunken banter and mindless couplings wears thin. But Christensen's acid wit burns up the pages until her sentimental slide into (gasp!) a happy ending. B-
