Lovers of 1950s mainstream jazz have long wondered if the riches first released by Vanguard Records would ever again see the light of day in the CD era. These two samplers cull gorgeous tracks from undervalued pianist Powell’s three albums for the label, as well as a contingent of Count Basie band stars including trumpeter Buck Clayton and drummer Jo Jones. If swing’s heyday was over, nobody informed these masterly players.
