Ron Sexsmith doesn’t sound any more optimistic about the future in Whereabouts than he did on his two previous albums; he may be the only singer-songwriter who can make a line like ”Where there’s still hope, there’s still time” seem anything but hopeful. Producers Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake do a wonderfully understated job of colorizing Sexsmith’s sad-kid melodies and voice, adding an R&B groove to ”Right About Now” and a swirling orchestra to ”Beautiful View.” Call it buoyant sorrow.
