A Cool, Dry Place

Ordinarily he may be flippant, smarmy, or plain psycho, but here Vaughn makes something worthwhile out of a film that’s just slightly less formulaic than a TV movie. In A Cool, Dry Place he plays an earnest single dad juggling parental responsibilities and a romantic triangle involving his negligent, estranged wife (Potter) and an irresistible divorcee (Adams). He’s surprisingly at ease in the role, still offhand and incisive, whether conveying fatherly affection or, in more characteristic moments, fulminating with frustration. B-
