Previously available on video in inferior versions that either were excessively scratchy or had too much contrast, Sergei Eisenstein’s landmark debut gets a new lease with this gorgeous digital transfer and a terrific score by the Alloy Orchestra. Yes, the agitprop is dated, but as filmmaking, Strike is still a thrilling orgy of images, constructivist graphics, and experimental use of reverse motion and superimposition, all dazzlingly edited. It’s like watching cinema being invented right before your eyes. A-
