Because adults seldom pass up a chance to act childish, Nickelodeon’s 12th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards, held May 1 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, was packed with stars looking to play. Young Hollywood ruled, as The Wedding Singer stars Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler took home awards for Favorite Movie Actress and Actor (kids cast 6.2 million votes to select winners). But Britney Spears got the most attention: Performing via satellite from Orlando, Fla., she flaunted her much-discussed assets in a very cropped top that prompted backstage murmurs. In the press room, kid reporters fired questions at such stars as Rachael Leigh Cook (She’s All That), ‘N Sync, and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, who offered this tip: ”Do something you love every day.” One member of TLC also had a message: The media ”misinterpreted what I said,” said Lisa ”Left Eye” Lopes, of reports that she’s going solo. ”I’m not going anywhere.” Braving the squeals of the 8,000 attendees, David Arquette said this about the event’s place in the pantheon of awards shows: ”Well, it’s certainly the loudest.”
