At his best, Billy Joe Shaver crafts such emotionally resonant vignettes of beautiful losers that even the most stoic listener will weep by record’s end. Electric Shaver, however, doesn’t jerk the heartstrings as much as it explores the songwriter’s roots in roadhouse rock and Texas blues. With son Eddy’s chain saw of a guitar well oiled and smoking, it kicks up plenty of down-home grit and highway grime. B-
