Despite its mortifyingly preteenish title, The Go On Girl! Book Club Guide for Reading Groups is a good warm-up volume for recreational book chats. Founded in 1991, the Go On Girl! Book Club is the largest black women’s reading group in the country, with 32 chapters and almost 400 members — all nose-deep in the same titles. This collection includes excerpts from club favorites, discussion questions, and interviews with writers from Gloria Naylor (The Women of Brewster Place) to Octavia Butler (Wild Seed). Although the authors’ classics list is so spotty it’s almost useless, their attention to contemporary authors, both famous and not, is thoughtful. As to whether black women readers require an all-black literary diet: Save it for the discussion. B
