Sometimes it’s fun to unchain the junkyard dog, just to watch him snap at everything in sight. Ergo, the rottweiler-throated Ness — freed from his powerchording Social Distortion — gleefully chomps at country (Hank Williams’ “You Win Again”), rockabilly (“Send Her Back”), even thoughtful folk (Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice”). And when Bruce Springsteen starts snarling alongside him, on a mean “Misery Loves Company,” it’s American rock at its most rabid. B+
