The new romantic comedy ”Friends and Lovers” (opening today in New York and L.A.) could be called a bedroom-door-slamming farce, except that the bedroom doors are left wide open to the cameras during the frenetic love scenes. When a co-ed group of pals (led by Stephen Baldwin, Alison Eastwood, and Claudia Schiffer) and an off-the-wall ski instructor (Robert Downey Jr.) start pairing off during their ski-weekend getaway, the snowsuits go flying and the film turns into ”Red Shoe Diaries”-meets-”Benny Hill.”

Though you shouldn’t set your expectations too high — Schiffer remains strategically draped throughout the entire romp — at least a few of the other actors were able to set aside thoughts of modesty in order to do justice to their roles. In a comically animated coupling between Eastwood and costar Neill Barry (”Melrose Place”), the activity is wild enough to make the bed collapse. ”(The bed falling apart) wasn’t supposed to happen,” Baldwin tells EW Online. ”But it just goes to show — when you put two motivated actors together, here’s what you might come up with. Or break down with.”

The most startling scene comes when the male friends disrobe at a Jacuzzi, and the camera pans down Barry’s body to focus on his crotch. By all appearances, he is gifted with an anatomy that would shame Dirk Diggler, causing the women in the movie to shriek in apparent terror — and appreciation. But unlike Mark Wahlberg’s prosthetic genitalia in ”Boogie Nights,” this is the real thing. ”That’s Neil Barry uncut,” says Baldwin.

Since Barry is a cowriter of the film, it looks as if he intentionally scripted the scene to show off his own special feature. ”Yes, he wrote his penis into the film.” admits Baldwin, about his proud friend. ”And from the feedback I’m getting, it’s quite a prideful penis.” Now there’s an image that could liven up those ”For Your Consideration” ads at Oscar time.
