Abba -- A Tribute/ the 25th Anniversary Celebration

How good were ABBA’s songs? Good enough to survive this redundant-as-usual tribute album in which they’re transformed into passable high-NRG dance (Hazell Dean’s ”The Winner Takes It All,” E-Rotic’s ”Money, Money, Money”), forlorn folk (Evan Dando’s ”Knowing Me, Knowing You”), rocky power pop (Ash’s ”Does Your Mother Know”), bad pop-metal (”Waterloo” by the needlessly reunited Bananarama), and even worse electro-Beach Boys (Mike Love’s ”On and On and On”). The oily rendition of the timeless ”SOS” by Peter Cetera and Ronna Reeves proves a good song can survive anything. C+
