Must-see BBC. This 13-episode set of the Edwardian-era drama about the Bellamy household and its servants is jam-packed with literate writing and deeply felt performances (noteworthy are Marsh’s lonely parlormaid and Pauline Collins’ redeemed nurserymaid). Fortunately, Upstairs, Downstairs is also a ripping good yarn, offering up such juicy plot twists as blackmail, homosexuality, and women in prison. The characters are fleshed out with such integrity that 27 years later, they still seem relevant. Jolly good show, indeed. A
