”If you’re light, you’re all right/If you’re brown, stick around/But if you’re black, get back.” Having grown up hearing such rhymes, it’s little surprise that Graham — an African-American lawyer whose 1995 expose, Member of the Club, described his undercover stint as a busboy in a whites-only country club — had a nose job to secure his position in the black elite. But Graham’s own story is almost an aside in this book, which is one of the few detailed social histories of black upper-class America, complete with lists of the ”proper” all-black summer resorts, boarding schools, colleges, and cotillions. It’s a fascinating chronicle of a hidden community that reveals how wealthy, powerful blacks can be just as class — and color — conscious as whites. B+
